LinkedIn is the world’s largest online professional network. It has over 700 million users with over 260 million active users every month and is growing every day! At the same time, about 40 million users use the platform to search for jobs. What’s more? About 3 people get hired every minute, according to LinkedIn statistics.
Whether you are looking to find a new job or a complete career change, LinkedIn is the single best place to do it. It is estimated that 80% of the members of LinkedIn are decision makers which means that these are people who can help you to advance your career.
Here are five tips that you can use to improve your LinkedIn profile:
Tip One: Add more skills
You are allowed to add 50 skills to your profile so make sure that you take advantage of this fact. The more skills that you add the greater the chance that you will be discovered by recruiters and employers when they perform a search on LinkedIn.
To add skill go to the Edit LinkedIn Profile area and then scroll down to below the Experience section and click on Add skills. In adding skills to your profile, make sure you think about the ones which you would like to be known for. This is important as most if not all of the skills you identify are likely to be the same skills that recruiters will be using to search LinkedIn profiles that match their requirements.
Tip Two: Improve your headline
Your headline along with your name and photo are the only things that are seen throughout the LinkedIn network. It is vital that you put time into developing a good headline. This will give you a tremendous advantage over most people who only use the default setting of their current job title. Instead think in terms of your brand and the way you would like to be perceived.
Tip Three: Get more recommendations
Recommendations are a key aspect of any LinkedIn profile as they can give a massive boost to your credibility. People know that you are unable to edit these recommendations and they can see that they come from real users. In order to get more recommendations, simply make sure you give recommendations to other people. You will find that in most cases people will be happy to reciprocate.
Tip Four: Get a custom URL
The LinkedIn Profile URL that is assigned to you when you join LinkedIn will have a lot of random numbers. This makes it difficult for people to search for or remember you. Having a URL, that is customised to either your name or job title will help ensure that you are easier to search for or find on LinkedIn. To change your URL to your own name simply click on edit next to the assigned link.
Tip Five: Have a 100% complete LinkedIn profile
While the exact formulation of the LinkedIn search algorithm is unknown most experts believe that having a 100% complete profile pays a big part in where you turn up in search results. There are other advantages of having a complete LinkedIn profile. It also looks far more professional and provides more opportunities for keywords to be found.
If you are planning a career change having a complete LinkedIn profile, is one of the most important steps you can take along your career journey.
